The Old Man and the Sea Read-Along

Hamlette from The Edge of the Precipice has decided to have a read-along of The Old Man and the Sea beginning July 21st.  Shall I join?  But, of course!

I have to admit, I just finished reading The Old Man and the Sea, but I'm going to revisit it during the read-along.  Why?  Because read-alongs give me a deeper understanding of the book that I'm reading, and it's fun to have the company of other readers.  And I may need some help appreciating Hemingway because, honestly, the first book of his that I attempted to read years ago was a big flop.  Let's hope the second read is a charm!

So please join us if you want to read a small book, with an unlucky man and a very big fish!

  1. Woo! Thanks for joining up. While I'm a fan of Hemingway's writing, this book left me cold when I first read it, so I'm interested to see if hosting the read-along will help me appreciate it, or help me figure out why I didn't/don't care for it. Glad to have you aboard!

    1. Thanks for hosting! When I saw the read-along, I was excited to have the chance to read the book with other readers.

I first read Hemingway when I was about 20. I did not like his writing but, for the life of me, I can't remember why. I'll wait to reveal how I felt this time. It will be interesting to hear about your reaction to him the second time 'round.

    2. I was 19 when I first read one of his novels, and his writing entranced me. I'm not a huge fan of the stories he tells, but the way he writes just entrances me. Except in this story, lol.

  3. I thought you were refraining from tempting me with new reads for the currently reading list of mine that is out of control.

End of July, short book and would actually count for my TBR challenge.....so I guess I shall be creating an intro post soon.

    1. Well, you did just mention that I hadn't tempted you lately, so I thought I'd rectify that oversight. ;-)

The book is short and not much of a burden ……… I'm looking forward to bugging you once your post goes up.

    2. Yes, short books are my friend right now.

Now I have to find something to tempt you with. ;)

    3. Ha ha! Good luck! I am holding out for June; no new books. I almost got tempted by a Richard III read but I resisted. If I can resist Shakespeare with a challenge that is a complete flop so far, I think I can resist anything! ;-)

  4. Oh, this is so tempting... I LOVE the classic movie adaptation and have wanted to read the book finally. Since, as you say, it's short, I think I'll try to make time for this, too. :)

  5. I just signed up for this event. I'm hoping that a read-along will help understand Hemingway a little better.
