I always thought of science as theories that scientists attempt to prove. Even proven theories can be disproven later on, so, for me, it is hard to see all science as concrete knowledge. Adler lived in a time when science was younger so perhaps it appeared more consistent or unvarying. I'm not sure ..... I think the whole piece about reaching a logical/mathematical conclusion on democracy is very interesting. While Adler's colleague seems to think that it takes away free will, I somehow cannot help but feel in the first reading that a logical approach rather sharpens the choices of free will. Just thinking aloud!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7495382709151625398.post-16160468967666152952017-04-09T20:49:06.829-07:002017-04-09T20:49:06.829-07:00i do see a lot of confusion on this point... bein...i do see a lot of confusion on this point... being a scientist of sorts myself, and coming from a family of them, i'm pretty familiar with what it actually is... science is measuring things, basically... there are protocols to ensure honesty of measurement, but in essence, that is all there is to it... getting a tape measure and believing what it tells you... there are different sorts of tape measure of course, and the employment of them has gotten very sophisticated, but it's all rooted in hands on information... the whole point being to avoid opinion and establish physical reliability of information...

i'm not debating here, as i have no desire to do that... just imparting information...Mudpuddlehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17194891656971454279noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7495382709151625398.post-88534939727667022312017-04-09T14:31:23.969-07:002017-04-09T14:31:23.969-07:00I'm certainly not an expert, but it seemed lik...I'm certainly not an expert, but it seemed like Adler was advocating science when dealing with fact (knowledge), yet another means when dealing with opinion. And since opinion is at the root of most of human thought and action, science would not do much good. I believe I agree with him ..... the only issue that is a little muddy for me is whether science is actually all fact (knowledge). I don't think so, but would have a hard time articulating or explaining this belief.Cleohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13152128642971612433noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7495382709151625398.post-53995266866674113012017-04-09T10:11:43.055-07:002017-04-09T10:11:43.055-07:00a pithy synopsis... tx... i confess to not knowi...a pithy synopsis... tx... i confess to not knowing whether this type of discussion lies at the root of human behavior or not... it seems possible that science should have a role in there, someplace... fact as opposed to opinion might be fortuitous...Mudpuddlehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17194891656971454279noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7495382709151625398.post-57726644715920994072017-04-09T07:56:18.878-07:002017-04-09T07:56:18.878-07:00Thanks, Book Stooge, considering my brain hardly f...Thanks, Book Stooge, considering my brain hardly feels up to it lately. One more post on this topic and then on to man and his nature. I'm looking forward to the topic after that which is on love.
