Guardian's 1000 Novels

It's very rare that I find a list of must-read books that I like or agreed with but I was very impressed with the Guardian's list of 1000 books.  It covers so many eras and genres and even has a few obscure, yet excellent books that are not often recorded in other "top" lists.

I will slowly make my way through this list to expand my reading diet!

  1. What a long list with some very good books.....and some not so good!
( Please forget "Stranger in a Strange Land"[see review]) it is a waste of your precious reading time! I would like to put the Guardian 1000 list on my blog too. It is a great incentive to keep reading!

    1. Thanks for your feedback, Nancy. I will avoid "Stranger" or, at the very least, put it at the end of the list reading order. I'm even struggling with whether I should finish Tender is the Night because, personally, I feel that is a waste of time too.

I liked the list because it was a little eclectic and would get me reading books that I wouldn't normally choose to read that would have some value. I'm certainly going through it slowly without much focused attention but I do seem to be crossing off books here and there. It's a good list to put on your blog!

    2. Tender is the Night: just skim the book.... there is usually an link to alcholism with a character. That is about all I discover in most of his books. Usually the character is like Hemingway, shy with an inexpressilbe glance in his eyes...
The list is truly a great mix and reading sci-fi/fantasy will be like pulling teeth. Yet I must give every book a chance!

    3. Skimming sounds good, and I like your Hemingway parallel.

For Sci-fi/fantasy, try C.S. Lewis' Space Trilogy: Out of the Silent Planet/Perelandra/That Hideous Strength. Each book is so different and there is such depth to each one of them. I'm reading one each for September, October and November. I can't wait!

  2. I've never read C.S. Lewis...these sound like some good books to start with. Thanks for the tip!

  3. I keep hoping to finish this list in my lifetime....
Glad to see you are reading some on these books!
Will we see a #20BooksOfSummer list on your blog soon?

    1. Ah Nancy, so good to hear from you! Thanks for the prod --- I have a summer books post up now, thanks to you! Hope that you're doing well! :-)

    2. Wonderful to be back!
...I experienced what you did last year.
I lost a very sweet Mindy, one of my cats.
I remember when you lost your dog, it is so difficult. It even effected my reading (see post update Tolkien for Brona's Books Read-a-long). So glad to see your Summer reading list. I will copy the link and send it out on Twitter! I'm into French books these last few weeks...but MUST do a 'Ancient Classic' ...very soon, just for you!

    3. Oh, I'm so sad to hear about Mindy. I know how difficult it is to lose a beloved pet. I still miss Bear and think about him multiple times per week. I hope for you that the grief is passing and that you're feeling better.

Ha ha! I'm into the ancients right now and will soon start The Republic. I still remember when you read it and am looking forward to it! :-)

  4. Cleo, I re-posted my review 'The Republic'.
It was a great book...but very demanding of the reader!

  5. I just finished Pale Fire (Nabokov)....it was really a challenge. Trying to put my thoughts in review, will publish soon. Another book read now.... 999 more to go!

    1. Ah, I'm so interested in what you thought of Nabokov. I will pop over and find out! :-)

  6. I wrote a concept review of Pale Fire....but letting it reat a few days. There was so much in that book and I cannot possibly touch on everything. Just finished Ragtime (E.L. Doctorw) It is NOT on Guardian list .....but it is on Modern Library list. I was entertained by not impressed (review follows) Don't feel Doctorow's book in top 100- ish. :)
I really want to tackle Guardian, Modern Library and 'ancients' during next 6 months. French is definietly on backburner now.

    1. Thanks for the update. I've read a few 'meh' non-classics lately so I want to target some good reads coming up, so I don't start to feel uninspired. I just need to get started on my big reads this month (The Republic and City of God) and then I'll feel better about adding others. Good luck with your lists!

  7. Always trying to move along with this list...but it is not easy!(reading french, cooking....seduced by new books!)
I thought I would try the Earthsea Series as a tribute to Ursula Le Guin who died on January 22 2018. RIP

    1. I know! I'm having difficulty reading anything at the moment and I'm skiing today, so another day gone. Fun times though! I read A Wizard of Earthsea and enjoyed it but I wasn't over the moon about it. It was actually for a university class. Yes, she was 88 though and it sounded like she had a grand life!

    3. I made it through okay, but I've sent an expectation of myself, haven't I? ;-)
