Brontë's writing ..... often their clerical figures are portrayed in a less-than-flattering light. I believe that they respected the church and the clergy but realized that humans are human and that there are some who abuse their position, and wanted to show that. Septimus Harding of Trollope's The Warden is the flip side to these characterizations.

I received a book for Christmas called, Pastors in the Classics: Timeless Lessons on Life and Ministry from World Literature which I should get to soon. It will be interesting to meet the different pastors through literature and investigate how they are portrayed.Cleohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13152128642971612433noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7495382709151625398.post-24265980208706446962015-10-03T07:40:24.215-07:002015-10-03T07:40:24.215-07:00I did like this tale but The Pardoner was awful! It had a great message, but ironically The Pardoner didn't seem to see it.

As you said in a comment on my blog (which by the way I *did* reply to but I've just seen now my reply hasn't shown up!) the clergy aren't portrayed very well - I dare say many of Chaucer's time were fed up with their hypocrisies. :)ohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01245931629228090133noreply@blogger.com
