If you haven't participated in one of Hamlette's read-alongs before, you are in for a treat. They progress at such a slow pace, that it allow the reader time to read deeply, mull over what they have read, and come up with insights that would have perhaps been missed with a quicker read. When you finish, you feel like you know the book backwards, forwards, and upside-down. They are so beneficial!
This read-along will begin on May 29th and proceed through the summer until we finish. Having just read Brönte's Villette and being less than thrilled with it, I'm looking forward to re-visiting one of my all-time favourites.

DeleteMy dilemma too! Do I use the paperback my best friend gave me when I turned 18, that I have lots of notes in from when I used it in college, or do I use my big hardcover with big margins to write in, or do I use the smaller hardcover that is prettier? Decisions, decisions!

ReplyDeleteHamlette's read-alongs are veryyyyyy sloooooowww, so it's usually quite easy to read other books too. You're not the only one who needs help, so let that be a comfort to you. ;-)
DeleteAnd by "veryyyyyy slooooowww" she means "we read 2 or 3 chapters a week." Super relaxed pace cuz I'm a busy mom and don't have time to post about it faster than that :-o

ReplyDeleteI don't know ........ I think it's coincidence. I've noticed occasionally that a certain book will pop up everywhere. In this case, perhaps it's a subliminal message that you should join the read-along. ;-)

DeleteI remember you wrote about how dissapointed you were in Villette. I just found out that she was 3rd of 6 siblings (5 sisters and 1 brother). First her mother and two eldest sisters died. Then over 20 years after, her brother, Emily, and then Anne all died within a year of each other. She wrote Villete in her grief. Perhaps that's why it wasn't so good?
I'm going to take a look into this read-along...I'm not sure if I'll participate but it IS VERY tempting. ;-) haha!
I just found out about the other two sisters. How tragic. Yes, I certainly think the writing of Villette was affected by her grief. There is a tone of not caring, as if she wanted to say to the reader that life is not all sunshine and here's what could happen.
