Did you know that besides the scholarly, theological and children's books that C.S. Lewis wrote, he also delved into fantasy? Set on Mars, Venus and Earth, Out of the Silent Planet, Perelandra and That Hideous Strength are vastly different works that grasp the reader's imagination in a wholly unique way.
Beginning September 1st and reading one book per month, my Goodreads Group, The Dead Writer's Society will be delving into this trilogy, and I have volunteered to lead this intrepid group of readers. Do you like adventure and surprise? Have you ever wanted to travel to another planet? Then come and join us! Head over to The Dead Writer's Society and when you request membership, say that I sent you. It should be a stimulating conversation!
Ooo. I might. I love the Space Trilogy.
ReplyDeleteOh, please do, Jean! We'd love to have your input!
DeleteThe thing is, I'm not very good at committing to more online things, esp. on Goodreads. Could I join for 3 months? It has this rule about not being a lurker and I worry that I would just from lack of time.
DeleteYes, you can join and don't worry about it. If you wanted to -un-join in three months, that's just fine. Even if you didn't un-join, I think you get deleted after a certain period if you remain inactive. They are trying to attract people who want to participate in the group but in this case, there can be an exception. After all, getting a good discussion going will perhaps draw more people to the group so your three-month membership might benefit us, in any case! Hope to see you there!
DeleteCool, I always wanted to read Out of the Silent Planet considering C.S. Lewis was a great influence on the band Iron Maiden. They even did an entire song dedicated to the book.
ReplyDeleteNow, I didn't know that! I wonder how many other areas this work influenced?
DeleteI had a look at Dead Writer´s Society and now see why you were reading certain books! Question: Why is the group reading the same author (Sept - Dec) C.S. Lewis...
ReplyDeleteFor 2014 we have the C.S. Lewis Project (see the top left button on my blog) in which 12 books of his were chosen to be read. Not everyone is reading all the books, members can read or not read, as their schedule allows.
DeleteFor 2015 I think we'll be doing an Austen Project, but it hasn't been confirmed yet.
The projects and challenges are in addition to the main read (War of the Worlds this month) and the Long Read (we just finished The Guns of August). And members can also participate in buddy reads, if they so desire.
If you have another other questions, please let me know! :-)
Oh oh oh I would so LOVE to do this, but am dedicating September to my bulky spin book, The Hunchback of Notre Dame. If I finish it before the month ends, I might pop in last minute, because I do so adore C. S. Lewis!
ReplyDeleteAnd with school, you probably don't have time to add an extra book, right? I understand. I hope you zip through The Hunchback and are able to join us!
DeleteI hope so. I hope school isn't the issue - it's just I don't like reading multiple books at once! I tried last May and it was madness.
